Getting started
What is Frameboard for?
Planning a shoot. Moodboard, storyboard and shot list are three states of the same image on one canvas, so a reference you dropped in becomes a shot with a size, a lens and a duration without being exported anywhere.
Where do I begin?
A new account lands inside a sample production rather than an empty canvas, because reading a real board teaches faster than a tour. Delete it whenever you like. For a real job, start from a template: there are 10 of them across 6 categories, and each one arrives as a working board rather than a title and some empty cards.
What is actually in a template?
Every scene arrives with a brief, the two or three pieces of direction that scene needs, and its shots. Each shot already carries a size, a lens, a movement, a duration and the practical note that stops the usual mistake, so the shot list, the runtime and the coverage strip all say something true the moment you open it. The numbers are estimates you are meant to correct. Where a job has a real time budget, like the 30-second commercial, the beats add up to it exactly.
What do the colours on template cards mean?
The stripe down the left of a card says what kind of thing it is: blue for the brief, purple for the look, teal for the sound, red for the watch out, green for the logistics and pink for the cast and crew. Shot cards are left uncoloured on purpose, so the colour channel stays free for what you will actually want it for, which is marking shoot days, second unit or pickups. Every template ships a document explaining it, and you can right-click any card to change its colour or ignore the scheme entirely.
Do I have to confirm my email?
To use the canvas, no. To share a production or invite anyone, yes. Sharing sends mail on your behalf, so the address has to be real. The banner in the editor will resend the link.
Is there an app to install?
No. It runs in the browser, including on a phone, and your work is mirrored locally as you type so a dropped connection does not cost you the last few minutes.
The canvas
How do I move around?
Scroll to zoom, shift and scroll to pan sideways, and drag with the right button, the middle button, or space held down. F fits the whole board, shift F fits just what you have selected.
What can go on a board?
Notes, sketches, images, clips, comments and tables. Connectors draw lines between cards and follow them as they move. Cards carry an optional colour tag down their left edge.
How do I turn a reference into a shot?
Select the card and press T. It flips to its shot side, where the size, lens, movement, duration, description and notes live, and it joins the shot list immediately. Press T again to go back to the picture. Comments and tables cannot be flipped, because they are not frames.
Can I undo?
Everything is undoable with the usual shortcut, including edits made in the documents and the lighting plan. Work another person made does not go on your undo stack: pressing undo should take back what you did, not quietly revert a collaborator.
Scenes and shots
What is a scene?
A board. It carries a scene number, a title, a location, interior or exterior, and day or night, which is exactly what a slugline is made of, so the script view and every export read the same.
How does shot numbering work?
Numbers follow production order and renumber themselves as you drag shots around. A number you typed by hand is kept, so a 12A stays 12A while everything around it moves.
Can I hold a scene to a running time?
Yes. Give the scene a target in seconds in the scene details and its recorded runtime shows against it, as 0:38 of 0:30, and turns red when it runs over. Durations come from the shots, so the number moves as you plan. The commercial, social and product templates arrive already budgeted.
Can I import a screenplay?
Fountain files, yes. Every scene arrives as a board with the location, interior or exterior and time already parsed off the slugline. The script goes back out as Fountain or as a Courier PDF.
Exports
What can I get out of it?
Free on every plan: the current scene as a PNG, the shot list as a CSV, the script as Fountain, the whole project as JSON, and the coverage strip and wrap card. On Pro: the shot list, the storyboard at four or six per page, and the shooting script, all as PDFs.
What are the coverage strip and the wrap card?
A way to show what you have made without showing the work. The strip is three lines carrying the shape of a scene and none of its content, and the wrap card is the same thing as an image. No titles, no images, no notes, no project name unless you switch it on. Safe to post while a production is still under wraps.
Can I get my work out if I stop using Frameboard?
The project JSON is the whole document, and importing it brings everything back. No export is gated behind an account being in good standing.
Account and plans
What does Free include?
3 productions and 25 MB of uploads, with unlimited scenes, cards and shots inside them. At the limit everything you have made stays open, editable and exportable; you just cannot start a new one until you archive one.
What does Pro add?
Unlimited productions, 250 MB of uploads, and the PDF exports.
How do I change my password?
From the account page, or through the forgotten-password link if you cannot sign in. Changing it signs out every other device, which is the point of changing it.
How do I delete my account?
From the account page. It removes the account and everything it owns, and it is not reversible, so export anything you want to keep first.
When something goes wrong
My changes are not saving
The toolbar says what the document is doing. If it reports that someone else saved while you were working, your changes are still on your device and reloading takes their version, so copy anything you cannot lose before you reload.
An upload was refused
Either the file is larger than a single upload allows, it is a format that is not accepted, or the account is at its storage limit. Deleting a card does not free the space until the sweep runs; archiving or deleting the production does.
The confirmation email never arrived
Check the spam folder, then use the resend link in the editor banner or on the account page. Each new link kills the previous one, so use the newest.
A shared link is not working for someone
Confirm it has not been revoked, and that they are opening the share link rather than the editor URL. The editor URL requires an account with access; the share link does not.
Your work
Is there any AI in this?
No. Frameboard will not generate shots, rewrite a script or suggest what to film. There is no model anywhere in it, and nothing you make here is sent anywhere to be trained on. That is a position, not a gap.
Who can see my productions?
You, anyone you have invited, and anyone holding a share link you created. Support access exists for repairing an account, it is recorded against the person who used it with the time and the owner's address, and it is not used without you asking.
